PCT Day 37: Starting the last push to the Sierras PCT Day 37: Starting the last push to the Sierras
Walker Pass (mile 652.1) to mile 672.8
33.5km (20.8mi) / 8.25h / elevation gain of 1,466m (4,809ft) Conrad drives us back to the trailhead in the morning. At Walker Pass temperatures are way more pleasant than in the hot desert town of Ridgecrest and there is a gentle wind blowing. We start with some switchbacks that lead us gently uphill. Soon we have some killer views into the valley below us. The ascent flattens a bit and we are going around Mount Jenkins to the highest point of 2,200m (7,217ft), where we do a lunch break after 11km (6.8mi).
We then go downhill again, knowing we have to go back up again all of that. There are some craggy rocks around us and we continue down to the valley with sparsely forested hills. It’s quite hazy today and it’s getting worse as there are two fires going on at the moment, which are evidence of the extreme drought this year. For the PCT the next climb is unusually steep.
We continue downhill again and reach a little river, which is the first water source today. We take a little break but fill up our water 2km (1.2mi) later at the same river as there is another climb ahead of us and we don’t want to carry more than necessary. It goes up for over 500m (1,640ft), but gentler this time. Shortly before the highest point, we look for a place for the night. We do cowboy camping for the 5th night in a row now, I’m back to it after the horrible third night on the trail. Meanwhile, it’s much warmer than at the beginning of the PCT and it saves a lot of time as you don’t have to pitch and pack your tent. Unfortunately, we don’t have a really good view as it got very hazy, even if we are quite high up. #usa #pct #thruhike #pct2022 #california #thruhiking #thruhikingwomen #bucketlistadventures #neverstopexploring #hiking #wandernmachtglücklich #itsgreatoutthere #thegreatoutdoors #wandern #outdoor #trekking #theTrek #trekthePCT

PCT Days 31-36: Hikertown (mile 517.6) to Walker P PCT Days 31-36: Hikertown (mile 517.6) to Walker Pass (mile 652.1) The section of the Mojave desert is the driest stretch of the PCT. It’s sun-exposed and there are long water carries, that make it quite challenging. The first part follows “The Aqueduct” and rows of windmills until the trail continues uphill through the Tehachapi mountains. And it’s here that I meet my new little trail family, so I finally enjoy some good company again. We get closer to the Sierras every day and we charge up for the last push there in the town of Ridgecrest. #usa #pct #thruhike #pct2022 #california #thruhiking #thruhikingwomen #bucketlistadventures #neverstopexploring #hiking #wandernmachtglücklich #itsgreatoutthere #thegreatoutdoors #wandern #outdoor #trekking #theTrek #trekthePCT

PCT Week 5: The next section from Wrightwood to Hi PCT Week 5:
The next section from Wrightwood to Hikertown takes me from snow-covered Mount Baden-Powell on beautiful ridgelines and through shady pine forest back to warmer elevations. After a stop at the lovely campground in Acton, I cross the famous sandstone formations of Vasquez Rocks at Agua Dulce and finally drop down to the hot and windy valley of the Mojave Desert. #usa #pct #thruhike #pct2022 #california #thruhiking #thruhikingwomen #bucketlistadventures #neverstopexploring #hiking #wandernmachtglücklich #itsgreatoutthere #thegreatoutdoors #wandern #outdoor #trekking #theTrek #trekthePCT

PCT Day 23: Climbing Mount Baden-Powell Highway 2 PCT Day 23: Climbing Mount Baden-Powell
Highway 2 (mile 369.3) to Little Jimmy Campground (mile 383.9)
23.6km (14.6mi) / 6h / elevation gain of 1,200m (3,937ft) The first part of the day is nice and gentle with a little bit of up and down until the trail went down to the highway again and to a parking lot. Here begins the long ascent to Mount Baden-Powell (2,860m/9,407ft). It’s an elevation gain of 850m (2,788ft) in 6km (3.7mi), so it’s not that steep but continuous. My Achilles tendon is doing fine, I don’t have any pain whatsoever and I’m very happy about that. I’m walking slowly and doing small strides and listening closely to my body.
At around 2,500m (8,202ft) some snowfields appear and I get lost several times because the snow sometimes hides switchbacks and the footsteps lead me the wrong way. Finally, I reach the junction to the final push to the summit. There are some more snowfields and after conquering them I’m at the peak of Mount Baden-Powell. The panorama is breathtaking. The desert floor on one side, mountains on the other, including Mount Baldy with its towering 3.068m (4,193ft). I do a lunch break and meet familiar people again.
From here the trail leads mostly downhill. One of the snowfields on the way from the summit back to the junction is a bit tricky going down, so I set one foot after another very carefully. The trail then follows the ridgeline and I get lost two or three times again. It climbs a bit uphill to finally go downhill to a water source and a campsite. #usa #pct #thruhike #pct2022 #california #thruhiking #thruhikingwomen #bucketlistadventures #neverstopexploring #hiking #wandernmachtglücklich #itsgreatoutthere #thegreatoutdoors #wandern #outdoor #trekking #theTrek #trekthePCT

PCT Days 20-22: Mile 305.9 to Wrightwood (Mile 369 PCT Days 20-22: Mile 305.9 to Wrightwood (Mile 369.3) I was soaking in the Deep Creek Hot Springs, there was Trail Magic as well as some great views of Silverwood Lake. Out of the middle of nowhere appeared the Interstate 15 with a McDonald’s and on the long way into Wrightwood I got a painful Achilles tendonitis. But after a zero day in Wrightwood it was gone, to my relieve. Listen to your body, overuse can happen quickly. #usa #pct #thruhike #pct2022 #california #thruhiking #thruhikingwomen #bucketlistadventures #neverstopexploring #hiking #wandernmachtglücklich #itsgreatoutthere #thegreatoutdoors #wandern #outdoor #trekking #theTrek #trekthePCT

PCT Day 19: Meandering through the Hills mile 282. PCT Day 19: Meandering through the Hills
mile 282.6 to mile 305.9
38.6km (24mi) / 8h / elevation gain of 400m (1,312ft) The trail went mostly downhill and through hills that were sprinkled with scattered rocks. I got to a water source and refilled my water. Later I crossed the river again, balancing on a fallen tree. After 24km (15mi) I reached a bridge and under it was a great lunch spot by the riverside. You can even go swimming here. It’s a nice refreshment on a hot day. After a long break, I took off again and followed Deep Creek, which was meandering in a little canyon below the trail. There was enough water today, so I didn’t need to carry much. I also passed the 300 miles marker.
I was thinking whether I should push on to the Hot Springs, but because it was Saturday night it might be crowded and loud as it’s a spot popular with locals on the weekends. So I pitched my tent 3km (1.8mi) before the Hot Springs to go there in the early morning. It was the next day that a fellow hiker told me that he found some mountain lion tracks right next to our tents and he didn’t want to tell me before as I would have had a bad night with that in my mind. He was probably right but still, I really wanted to see the tracks. #usa #pct #thruhike #pct2022 #california #thruhiking #thruhikingwomen #bucketlistadventures #neverstopexploring #hiking #wandernmachtglücklich #itsgreatoutthere #thegreatoutdoors #wandern #outdoor #trekking #theTrek #trekthePCT
